Sin: 2403 chattaah or chattath is derived from 2398 Chata:
to miss the way, sin, to forfeit, to endanger, to cause to sin,
to seduce, incur guilt, make guilty, to condemn. The word expresses
ideas of being off target (Judg. 20:16) and getting lost (Proverb.
19:2) It is coming up short of the goal (Prov. 8:36). It can
be a breach of civil law, a serious breakdown in a personal relationship
(1 Sam. 19:4; 24:11, 26:21), bearing the blame (Gen. 43:9; 44:32),
failure (Lev. 4:2; 5:16), not respecting another's rights (Gen.
20:9; Judg. 11:27; 2 Chr. 6:22), and sinning against God (Ex.
10:16; 1 Sam. 2:25).
It is falling short of God's standard. See the Greek world
anomia (458) in the NT Lexical aid. 458 Anomia: transgression
of the law, iniquity (Matt.7:23; Rom. 4:7; 1 John 3:7).
Sin 2403 means and offense to God (sometimes habitual sinfulness),
sin, a sinful thing.
When Isaiah was called into ministry, Isaiah said ".. Woe
is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and
I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes
have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims
unto me, having a live coal in his hand, [which] he had taken
with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid [it] upon my mouth,
and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity
is taken away, and thy sin purged. (Isaiah 6:5-7)
Death reigned from Adam to Moses. Romans 5:14
"But of the fruit of the tree which [is] in the midst
of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither
shall ye touch it, lest ye die. (Genesis 3:3) Eve believed Satan's
lie: "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not
surely die:" (Genesis 3:4)
"And when the woman saw that the tree [was] good for
food, and that it [was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be
desired to make [one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and
did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did
eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that
they [were] naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made
themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking
in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid
themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees
of the garden." (Genesis 3:6-8)
"But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled
Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from
the simplicity that is in Christ." (2 Corinthians 11:3)
To be beguiled means to be led astray. She did not believe God
that she would die but believed the devil.
Not only were they going to die but their lives
were going to be difficult.
"Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy
sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children;
and thy desire [shall be] to thy husband, and he shall rule over
thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto
the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I
commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed [is]
the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat [of] it all
the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring
forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; (Genesis
3:16-17)
"Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even
over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's
transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come."
(Romans 5:14)
Transgression 3847 Parabasis; an act which is excessive. It
is a transgression of a commandment distinctly given also called
sin.
"..Through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?"
(Romans 2:23) "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ
shall all be made alive." (1 Corinthians 15:22)
"There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name [was]
Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared
God, and eschewed evil." (Job 1:1) God confirmed it: "And
the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job,
that [there is] none like him in the earth, a perfect and an
upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still
he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against
him, to destroy him without cause. (Job 2:3)
This dispells the teaching that we can't be without sin. It
attests to the fact that we are under the sin factor by inheritance
as well as by our own making. That is what people mean when they
counter with "we can't get away from sin."
"The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the
Almighty hath given me life."(Job 33:4)
I am clean without transgression, I [am] innocent; neither [is
there] iniquity in me." (Job 33:9) "So Job died, [being]
old and full of days. (Job 42:17) Death was still the penalty.
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after
this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27)
"[Art] thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy
One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment;
and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.
[Thou art] of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look
on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously,
[and] holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth [the man that
is] more righteous than he?' (Habakkuk 1:12,13)
Here we have the reason why believers have to repent when
they accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and stop doing
evil. God cannot look upon evil.
"And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with
me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha
and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
For without [are] dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and
murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
" (Revelation 22:12-15)
Work 2041 Ergon; work, performance, the result or object of
employment. A calling or occupation. A labor enjoined by and
done for Christ as the spreading of His Gospel and furthering
of His Church, moral conduct. The WORKS MUST BE UNDERSTOOD AS
WORKS OF GOD WHICH GOD DOES. Also works that God requires to
be done. It proves genuineness of faith. Faith is proven by its
works (James 2:22)
Judging from Revelation 22:15 dogs, sorcerers, whoremongers
and murderers will not enter heaven. Dogs are Gentiles who have
not acknowledged that Jesus Christ is God and died for their
sins. The following Scripture establishes that. Crumbs are from
the bread that represents the Word of God, Christ Jesus, that
we are eat on a daily basis just as we eat food.
"And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs
which fall from their masters' table." (Matthew 15:27) We
always come back to the Word of God. Eve ignored the Word of
God and became deluded with the devil's teaching. Gentiles have
to eat the crumbs if they want to become part of Israel and be
grafted into the Olive tree.
"And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou
hast done this, thou {serpent, Satan, devil, Lucifer} [art] cursed
above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy
belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of
thy life: And I will put enmity between thee {Satan} and the
woman {Mary the mother of Jesus Christ}, and between thy seed
and her seed; it shall bruise thy head {Antichrist gets wound
on his head}, and thou shalt bruise his heel {Jesus' heel was
nailed to the cross}." (Genesis 3:14,15)
These verses fortell that Satan is active on this planet.
Another verse is: "And Satan stood up against Israel, and
provoked David to number Israel. (1 Chronicles 21:1). Satan can
only go so far since he has to answer to God. Even though Job
was without sin God gave him {Satan} access to Job to prove to
Satan that Job had faith that couldn't be moved away from God.
"So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and
smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his
crown." (Job 2:7)
Who is the accuser?
Not only can God not look upon sin but Satan has automatic
access to us when we sin. Let us first establish who the accuser
is.
"And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, NOW is come
salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the
power of his Christ: for the ACCUSER of our brethren is cast
down, which accused them before our God day and night.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the
word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto
the death." (Revelation 12:10,11)
Accuser 2723 Kategoreo; from kata (2596). against and agoreo
to speak openly against, to incriminate.
We are referred to Romans 8:33
"Who shall lay ANY THING to the charge of God's elect? [It
is] God that justifieth." (Romans 8:33)
Here we are assured that the sin factor does not exist for
born again believers. They are justified by the blood of Christ
Jesus. He purchased them with His blood.
"Who [is] he that condemneth? [It is] Christ that died,
yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand
of God, who also maketh intercession for us." (Romans 8:34)
This points to Rev.12. "And the God of peace shall bruise
Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
[be] with you. Amen." (Romans 16:20)
The following event is the birth of Israel. "And Abraham
circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded
him." (Genesis 21:4) Gentiles' hearts are circumcised when
they are born again, while Israelis were circumcised as babies
to set them apart as God's chosen people. They ended up in Egypt
as slaves under Pharoah. Moses brought them out of Egypt into
the wilderness for 40 years.
"And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the
mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and
a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest
teach them." (Exodus 24:12)
God gave the 10 Commandments and set up the foundation of
the rule of law, a forerunner of what was to come with the New
Testament.
The law was based on an eye for an eye. If one sinned one
had to pay the consequences by offering various sacrifices over
and over. Even though God lived among the twelve tribes protected
by the Levitical Priesthood, He proved that human nature was
at war with God. The sin factor grew to a point where God decided
to go back to heaven. His temple was destroyed.
There was always a small number of believers [prophets] who
kept the ball rolling. A new temple was built to continue the
Aaronic priesthood and the Law of Moses. The sin factor got so
wicked by the time Jesus began His ministry to prepare people
for what was to come, that a major campaign to kill Him was on
foot from the day He was born. Israel wanted no part of Jesus.
Here is what God proved:
Habakkuk complained to God: "Therefore the law is slacked,
and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass
about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth. (Habakkuk
1:4)
In Malachi, the final book of the Old Testament, Malachi promises
that the Messiah will return. "Then shall ye return, and
discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that
serveth God and him that serveth him not." (Malachi 3:18)
That Jesus did, He called them "this wicked generation."
(Matthew 12:45) Evil spirits had become rampant in Israel.
In summarizing what we have learned about sin so
far:
Adam and Eve were in an eternal existence when God created
them which was in the presence of God and since God cannot look
upon sin, they were perfect in every way.
Satan lied to Eve that "ye shall be as gods.." (Genesis
3:5) and they took the bait. That was the very reason Lucifer
was condemned to hell. Adam and Eve were doomed. In spite of
that they had two good children who wanted to please God. But
one was killed by his own brother and the other, less potent,
because he was not the first born, lived and God's plan took
hold.
Since there was much more evil than good, few survived the
struggle against evil. In those days righteousness came by one's
own doing through obedience to God. Only by obedience to God
can Satan be bound, down here on earth and that still goes to
this day. The earthly rule is still an eye for an eye.
In spite of the ten commandments which created more solid
boundaries, humanity kept deteriorating. God had promised Abraham
that he would eventually become the Father of many nations and
that he would have eternal life. Abraham believed that Isaac
would be resurrected if he offered him as a sacrifice.
This proves that a believer obeys God without reservations
instinctively, because he or she knows the truth. A believer
trusts God and knows what to do and has no problems doing it.
If he or she is in the wrong camp its because he or she has not
obeyed the most important rule and that is eating the Word of
God. How can they obey God without knowing God.
"And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness,
[and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings
of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our
sins in his own blood, (Revelation 1:5)
"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved
the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and
cleanse it with the WASHING OF WATER BY THE WORD, That he might
present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or
wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without
blemish. (Ephesians 5:25-27)
Imputed Sin
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by
the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be
saved by his life. And not only [so], but we also joy in God
through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the
atonement. (Romans 5:10,11)
"For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much
more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of
righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. Therefore
as by the offence of one [judgment came] upon all men to condemnation;
even so by the righteousness of one [the free gift came] upon
all men unto justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience
many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many
be made righteous." (Romans 5:17-19)
"MOREOVER THE LAW ENTERED THAT THE OFFENSE MIGHT ABOUND.
BUT WHERE SIN ABOUNDED, GRACE DID MUCH MORE ABOUND. THAT AS SIN
HATH REIGNED UNTO DEATH, EVEN SO MICHT GRACE REIGN THROUGH RIGHTEOUSNESS
UNTO ETERNAL LIFE BY JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD." (Romans 5:20,21)
".. we are buried with Him by baptism into death.. for
he that is dead is FREED from sin." (Rom. 6:4..7) "..
for that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world:
but SIN IS NOT IMPUTED WHEN THERE IS NO LAW." (Romans 5:12,13)
"Because the LAW WORKETH WRATH: FOR WHERE NO LAW IS, [THERE
IS] NO TRANSGRESSION." (Romans 4:15)
"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the
prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to FULFILL. (Matthew
5:17)
"But seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God, and HIS righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33)
Repentance
"Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should
be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him,
that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and
with [his] finger wrote on the ground, [as though he heard them
not]. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself,
and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him
first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote
on the ground. And they which heard [it], being CONVICTED BY
[THEIR OWN] CONSCIENCE, went out one by one, beginning at the
eldest, [even] unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the
woman standing in the midst. (John 8:5-9)
"Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost
thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit
sacrilege?" (Romans 2:22)
"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some
men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing
that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
(2 Peter 3:9) "Who will have all men to be saved, and to
come unto the knowledge of the truth." (1 Timothy 2:4)
Repent 3341 Metnoia: from metanoeo (3340), to repent with
regret accompanied by a true change of heart toward God. It signifies
a change of mind consequent to introspection, indicating regret
for the course pursued and resulting in a wiser view of the past
and future. Most importantly, it is distinguished from metamellomai
(3338), to regret because of the consequences of one's actions.
3341 continued: Metanoia: as the faculty of moral reflection.
It is combined with aphesis (859), remission of sins "And
that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his
name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (Luke 24:47)
